The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) is an American organisation funded by the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), US Department of Health and Human Services and jointly coordinated by The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and Duke University.
Within the network, frontline providers, researchers, and families collaborate to raise the standard of care for victims of childhood trauma while increasing access to services. With 150 participating centres, NCTSN has trained thousands of professionals who serve hundreds of thousands of children.

Challenge
Creating a social learning platform
Since 2001, the US Department of Health and Human Services has mandated the UCLA to build the NCTSN.
As part of its mission to raise the standard of care and improve access to services for traumatised children, their families, and their communities throughout the US, the NCTSN provides extensive learning resources to providers.
In particular, the NCTSN has a programme to train military and civilian health professionals who support service members, veterans and their families. In this case, our goal was to deploy a globally-accessible platform to provide workforce training to military providers.
A web-based system where they could acquire knowledge and experience, form online communities, share best practices and lessons learned from their collective experience.
Why eXo?
A trustworthy platform to build on
The choice of eXo over other vendors was based on our capacity to integrate with third-party applications (in this case e-learning management systems). Furthermore, eXo Platform’s advanced content management capabilities gave NCTSN teams the option to customise the solution based on their needs.
The evaluation team also found that eXo had already worked with the US Department of Defense to enhance communications in operational conditions, which was a pledge of confidence for a service that was primarily aimed at military families.
The impact
Improving access to mental health services
After a year in development and a pilot phase of six months, the social e-learning system is ready to be deployed to the whole network. Dozens of courses have been integrated into the learning centre to support approximately 3,000 professionals across the country.
With this new system, NCTSN hopes to foster collaboration among network affiliates to benefit American children.
